Functional Aspects:CD83 is a useful target antigen to identify mature and activated dendritic cells. CD83 is found on Langerhans cells in the skin, peripheral blood dendritic cells and interdigitating reticulum cells within the T cell areas of lymphoid organs. It is interesting to note that mature and activated dendritic cells are required for the recruitment of activated tumor specific lymphocytes during carcinogenesis and their presence is a hallmark of ongoing immune reactions. CD83 is also expressed on Reed Sternberg such as those in Hodgkin's disease.
